Educational Resources to help you Quarantine

May 9, 2020

Dear NYC FIRST Community,

We hope all of you have been staying safe and healthy during quarantine. If you're like us, you might be feeling a bit restless lately, and eager to get back to a sense of normal in your day to day.

Over the last few weeks, all of us at NYC FIRST have been compiling a list of resources for online learning, software, and hands-on activities. We hope you find these helpful and inspiring and you tackle your next virtual adventure. Below you can find a list of our favorites:

Fusion 360 is an amazing professional tool for 3D design. Lars Christensen runs a Youtube Channel offering guidance on how to use this CAD software. If you have some experience or if you are completely new to this program, these tutorials are a great way to continue designing digitally.

If you’re looking for a more interactive experience, NYC FIRST is hosting a series of virtual workshops held every Monday to expand your knowledge on 3D Design led by Yoav Friedlander. Join us at our next session on May 11th: Measure without a ruler - reverse engineering while quarantined -- and keep an eye out on our website for upcoming sessions.

If you’re looking to explore resources and tools used by designers, we found some interesting offerings: The 8 Best Free Browser-Based Adobe Illustrator Alternatives, 5 Web-Based Photoshop Alternatives and 7 New Browser-Based tools for Designers. And if you are more of a 3D person, make sure to check out these links: 5 Best Free 3D Modeling Software Options, Popular Web-Based Free 3D Modeling Software, 10 Best Free 3D Modeling Software for Beginners.

Other leading institutions are also offering online free courses that you can enroll in. For example, there are over 450 free online courses happening right now from 8 Ivy Leagues around the country, ranging from Computer Science to Art & Design and Social Sciences. The Museum of Modern Art in New York is also offering a series of specializations on Coursera. What is Contemporary Art, Postwar Abstract Painting, Seeing through Photographs are some of the available courses especially curated by the museum.
