Located inside the Queens Public Library at Central, the NYC FIRST STEM Center serves as a central hub for robotics teams, students, and educators across Queens and New York City. The Center provides a dedicated space where young innovators can design, build, and program robots while exploring real-world applications of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Students working in the Center have access to robotics equipment, fabrication tools, computers, and collaborative workspaces that support both FIRST competitions and independent STEM projects. Through workshops, build sessions, and mentorship opportunities, participants develop technical skills in coding, electronics, and engineering while also strengthening problem-solving, communication, and teamwork.
Situated in one of Queens’ most connected neighborhoods, the Jamaica STEM Center expands access to hands-on STEM learning for students from many surrounding communities. By combining the resources of a public library with the creativity of the FIRST robotics community, the Center helps empower the next generation of engineers, innovators, and leaders.
The STEM Center is located within the Teen Center of a Queens Public Library branch, and access follows the rules and age guidelines of the library’s teen spaces. Participation requires a valid Queens Public Library (QPL) library card. The center hosts teen workshops advertised through the Teen Center program schedule, and in some locations also offers credit-bearing classes in partnership with local schools. Teens without a library card may apply in person with a Photo ID (school ID, learner's permit, state ID) and proof of address (mail, report card, school schedule).
The NYC FIRST STEM Center at the Queens Public Library in Jamaica is accessible by subway, bus, and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR).The nearest subway stop is the 169 St Station on the F Line. Nearby Jamaica Center–Parsons/Archer (E, J, Z trains) is about a 10-12 minute walk from the library. Multiple MTA bus routes stop along Merrick Blvd and surrounding streets, including Q4, Q5, Q20A/B, Q24, Q30, Q31, Q42, Q44 SBS, Q54, Q56, and Q85.
Visitors arriving via LIRR at Jamaica Station can reach the library with a short walk or quick bus connection.
The library does not have a dedicated parking lot. Metered parking is available near the library on Merrick Blvd, 89th Ave, and 90th Ave, as well as other nearby streets. Some nearby streets also offer free street parking. Paid parking is available at the Jamaica First parking lots on 90th Ave between Merrick Blvd and 168th and 169th Streets. Visitors should check posted signs for parking regulations.
Enter through the main library entrance on Merrick Blvd and keep right and walk towards the Teen Center of the Library. The NYC FIRST STEM Center is located in the main Programming Room towards the rear of the Teen Center. Library staff can direct you to the NYC FIRST STEM Center space within the building.
Walk-in hours follow the Teen Center’s public hours at the Queens Public Library branch where the STEM Center is located. Access is limited to teens who meet the Teen Center guidelines and requires a valid Queens Public Library (QPL) card. NYC FIRST STEM Center member card holders may also use the space during these hours, provided they meet the library’s teen access requirements and follow QPL policies. Hours may change if the library adjusts its schedule or when workshops and other programs are taking place.
